CovCath swimmer wins four gold medals at state high school championship meet

Covington Catholic senior Brendan Meyer won gold medals in four events at the state high school swimming and diving championships on Saturday at Ralph Wright Natatorium in Louisville.

Meyer won the boys' 500 freestyle in 4:26.55 and the 200 freestyle in 1:38.45. He was also a member of the CovCath teams that finished first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:24.02) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:06.38).

His teammates in the 500 relay were Bryce Day, Nick Smith and Josh Smith. The other members of the winning 200 relay team were Bryce Day, Nick Smith and Evan McMillen.

Evan Brungs of CovCath had the second highest score in the boys' springboard diving competition. The Colonels' 200 medley relay team also placed second.

The only state champions in the girls' state meet were Lindsay Fox of Scott in diving (413.45) and Sophie Skinner of Notre Dame in the 100 freestyle (50.13).

The second-place finishers for Notre Dame were Skinner in the 200 freestyle, Amanda Smith in the 100 backstroke and Maddie Vonderhaar in the 100 breaststroke. Notre Dame's 200 medley relay team also placed second.

Louisville St. Xavier won the boys' team title with 361 points. CovCath took the runner-up trophy with 317 points. The top two teams in the final girls' standings were Louisville Sacred Heart with 435 points and Notre Dame wth 268.
