Top-ranked Wilmington faced Covington Catholic, the No. 1 team in The Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, Monday night and lost its first game of the season, 68-65.

"I thought defensively we did a real nice job," said CovCath head coach Scott Ruthsatz. "Even though the Cumberlands had 20 apiece, it was below their averages."

CovCath was led by Andy Flood and Cooper Theobald who both finished with 19 points and Cole VonHandorf added 16 points.

Bo Schuh recorded a double-double for the Colonels with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

"We controlled the boards," Ruthsatz said. "We knew going in we had to control the boards and Schuh was really active. With their athleticism that was the difference."

Wilmington was led by Jarron Cumberland with 21 and Jaevin Cumberland who scored.

"These guys aren't going to be starstruck moving forward. We knew their place would be loud and animated and we responded."

CovCath hit two free throws with five seconds remaining to go up by three points. Wilmington had a chance to tie the game but the 3-point attempt rimmed out.
